What is counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling and psychotherapy are professional services that help individuals, couples, and families address emotional, psychological, and relational issues. These services involve talking with a trained therapist who uses evidence-based techniques to facilitate understanding, coping, and positive change.
What is counselling and psychotherapy useful for?
The primary objective of therapy is to foster change. Individuals come to therapy because a certain aspect of their lives is not as they would like it to be. You may be experiencing difficulty with emotions, negative thinking patterns, dysfunctional behaviours, and/or difficulty relating to yourself or others.
How do I know if I need therapy?
If you are experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, stress, or if you are facing challenges in your relationships, work, or daily life, therapy can be beneficial. It’s also helpful for personal growth and self-improvement, even if you are not facing a specific issue.
What can I expect in the first session?
In the first session, we will discuss your reasons for seeking therapy, your goals, and any concerns you may have. It’s an opportunity for us to get to know each other and for you to ask questions about the therapeutic process. This session will help us determine the best approach for your needs.
How long does each therapy session last?
Each therapy session typically lasts 50-60 minutes. This time allows for in-depth discussion and therapeutic work while being manageable within a weekly schedule.
How often will I need to come to therapy?
The frequency of sessions depends on your individual needs and goals. Some clients benefit from weekly sessions, while others may come bi-weekly or monthly. We will discuss and decide on a schedule that works best for you.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of therapy. Everything you share in sessions is kept private, with a few exceptions required by law, such as if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, or in cases of abuse.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes, I may be able to accept insurance plans. Please contact me to see if I can work with your specific insurance company. If not, I can provide you with a receipt for you to submit to your insurance for reimbursement, but this will also be dependent on their requirements.
How do I prepare for my first session?
To prepare for your first session, think about what you want to achieve in therapy and any specific issues you would like to address. It’s also helpful to come with an open mind and be ready to discuss your thoughts and feelings.
What therapeutic approaches do you use?
I use a variety of therapeutic approaches tailored to each client’s needs (please see services page on the interventions that I specialize in). During our sessions, I will explain the methods that may be most beneficial for your own unique situation and circumstances.
Can therapy help with relationship issues?
Yes, therapy can be very effective in addressing relationship issues. Whether you’re dealing with communication problems, conflict, or other challenges, couples therapy can help you and your partner understand each other better and work towards a healthier relationship.
Are online therapy sessions available?
Yes, I offer online therapy sessions for clients who prefer or require remote sessions. Online therapy can be a convenient and effective way to receive support from the comfort of your own home.
What should I do if I have an emergency?
I do not offer crisis services. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or emergency, please call 999 or go to your nearest emergency room. Please visit my Support page for further information on other services you can contact.
How do I book an appointment?
You can book an appointment using the Contact page. I generally respond to queries within 24 hours. If you have any questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
What if I am not finding therapy helpful?
Therapy is not always suitable for everyone. Readiness may also play a part in this; being at the right stage in your life to want to make changes. Stability in your life is also important to determine whether it is the right time for therapy. It is important to be able to build a therapeutic relationship with your therapist and personal preferences may play a part in this. You may not always get on with every therapist. Discuss your concerns with your therapist on how you may move forward as other options may be available.
